Abstract
Are you a student of religion or a theologian?
Dr. Jonathan Z. Smith comments on the question of whether he calls himself a student of religion or a theologian. He explains that this question was not meaningful until people became concerned about the legality of teaching religion courses in publically funded State Universities. He dismisses the issue as irrelevant today and asserts that the more important questions are questions such as, is religion a true human activity.
